Proper Size For Open Heel Fins and Booties

by Joe

After many years I am getting back into snorkeling in the Florida Keys. I like the open heel fins w/booties for the hard coral areas for shore diving in the Keys. I have a question about size for fins and booties.

I take a size 10 shoe. Some of the short open heel fins are sized 7-10 medium or 10-13 large. Would it be correct to assume that with the bootie I should be in the 10-13 size? Please advise. Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for getting in touch. The Keys are great and I hope you are enjoying your snorkeling experience.

As far as your question, yes, I would start with the 10-13 size fin. However, as I advise on my scuba diving fins page, since you are choosing open heel fins and are going to be wearing booties with your fins, you should purchase the booties first. You need to have the bootie on when trying out the snorkeling fins to ensure you get the proper size and fit.

In a pinch though, I would do as you are thinking, starting with the 10-13 fin size. Since you might have to go one size larger depending on the thickness and sole of the bootie, the larger fin size should be able to accommodate this.

Let us know how your snorkeling is going. We would love to hear your experiences.

Have fun.

Dianne
