Scuba Diving Resort Course and Recognition

by Scott
(Chicago, Illinois)

I took a scuba diving resort course in Grand Cayman last year and did 3 dives.

I am headed to St. John this January and am wondering if that resort course in Grand Cayman registered me in some way to let other shops know that I have taken the beginner course...OR, do I just need to take the resort course again when I get to St. John, since I am not certified?

A location of that registration/list would be great! If it even exists!

Thanks.

Scott

Hi Scott,

Glad you enjoyed your scuba diving in Grand Cayman - that's a great place for an intro to the sport.

Unfortunately, there is no central registration of resort courses. Resort courses typically allow you to dive at that particular resort for the duration of your stay there.

If you go to another resort, you will need to take their resort course to allow you to dive with them (there possibly could be some exceptions such as going to a "sister" resort within a few weeks but that is not the case here).

However, since it has been awhile since you took your course, it will be a good refresher/review.

Don't take it personally though, even if you have your full certification, some dive shops require you do a "refresher" dive if it has been a significant amount of time since your last dive.

Have a great time in St. John. It is a beautiful island. I have only snorkeled there - wasn't able to get any scuba diving in while I was there. It's on the list though.

Enjoy and drop us a line when you get back and let us know how it goes.

Dianne
