Feb 14, Scuba Diving in the Bahamas: Georgetown, Exuma

We went scuba diving in the Bahamas off of Georgetown, Exuma. We did two dives - the first a small tug wreck and the second was a reef dive.

The diving was OK, not the greatest. We knew that going in but we wanted to get wet anyway. I will write a full report in the near future.

The divemaster also brought a group to Long Island in the Bahamas (about a 45 minute boat ride according to the captain) the previous day.

There they did a shark dive and saw about 15 or so nurse sharks. They didn't feed them but the sharks are used to being fed since another dive shop does the shark dive with feeding.

Maybe next time.

Hope this new year is finding everyone doing well. I recently had the chance to do some snorkeling in the Thunderball Grotto located off of Staniel Cay in the Exumas, Bahamas.

It was made famous by the James Bond movie - what else? - Thunderball.

When we went there was a strong current running through it so it added to the excitement. We were able to snorkel through with no problems though.

The grotto was not that big - I remember it seeming much bigger in the movie. I will have to rent the movie and check it out again.

There were quite a few fish in the grotto - including gray and queen angelfish among many others. Didn't expect to see that many fish so it was a pleasant surprise. You can't fish in the grotto which helps keep the fish around.

There is a hole on top of the grotto which some local guys would jump into and go straight into one small section of the grotto. Kudos to them. Not for me though. Great to watch, not to do.

If you ever get a chance to snorkel here, give it a go. It makes for an interesting outing.
