Apr 10, Can You Help Save Our Movie Theater?

OK, I am going to go a little off topic here and ask for your support.

Pepsi is running a challenge that awards grant money to "great ideas." In the current challenge is an entry from a group of people from my hometown to save our local theater.

I grew up going to this theater. It is a smalltown local theater that, unbelievably enough, has been run by the same family since 1949. It even has the old, original candy machines (you can see pictures on the link below).

Of course, times change and the family is now going to sell the theater. In response, a group has gotten together with the aim to "purchase, preserve and enhance (the) local movie theater... This theater is the financial anchor on Rosendales Main Street and an important source for the arts and culture in our community."

I wholly support this idea. It's a little piece of the past that younger generations can also enjoy. Such a different experience than going to the multiplex in the local mall!

If you have the time, please help the cause by casting your vote for the Rosendale Collective. You can read more about it and vote at
www.refresheverything.com/rosendaletheatrecollective.

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. Voting ends on April 30th.

Apr 6, Scuba Diving in Nassau, Bahamas

As many times as I have been in Nassau, I had never done any scuba diving from there. My experience of scuba diving in the Bahamas has been in the out islands (and has been fantastic for the most part).

On our sailing trip this year through the Bahamas we stopped at Nassau on our way back to the States.

Since I have never dove there, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and do a couple of dives.

Unfortunately, the two dives I did in Nassau didn't live up to the other dives I have done in the Bahamas.

Of course this was only two dives and I am sure there are other better dives available from Nassau. We went to the dive shop closest to our marina and these were the 2 dives they had schedule for the day. So off we went.

Both dives were close to the harbor and in a busy area. Neither one of the dives was up to the quality of the other scuba diving we had done in the out islands.

We did a wreck dive not that far out from the harbor and a reef dive off the lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor.

Not the best areas to be diving. But, as we say, at least it was good to get wet.

I will post a more detailed writeup now that we are back from vacation.

If anyone has experience scuba diving in Nassau, I would love to hear from you. I know there are better dives out there.

Thanks for any experiences you may share.

We went scuba diving in the Bahamas off of Georgetown, Exuma. We did two dives - the first a small tug wreck and the second was a reef dive.

The diving was OK, not the greatest. We knew that going in but we wanted to get wet anyway. I will write a full report in the near future.

The divemaster also brought a group to Long Island in the Bahamas (about a 45 minute boat ride according to the captain) the previous day.

There they did a shark dive and saw about 15 or so nurse sharks. They didn't feed them but the sharks are used to being fed since another dive shop does the shark dive with feeding.

Maybe next time.

Jan 20, Snorkeling in the Bahamas: Thunderball Grotto

Hope this new year is finding everyone doing well. I recently had the chance to do some snorkeling in the Thunderball Grotto located off of Staniel Cay in the Exumas, Bahamas.

It was made famous by the James Bond movie - what else? - Thunderball.

When we went there was a strong current running through it so it added to the excitement. We were able to snorkel through with no problems though.

The grotto was not that big - I remember it seeming much bigger in the movie. I will have to rent the movie and check it out again.

There were quite a few fish in the grotto - including gray and queen angelfish among many others. Didn't expect to see that many fish so it was a pleasant surprise. You can't fish in the grotto which helps keep the fish around.

There is a hole on top of the grotto which some local guys would jump into and go straight into one small section of the grotto. Kudos to them. Not for me though. Great to watch, not to do.

If you ever get a chance to snorkel here, give it a go. It makes for an interesting outing.
